America: from land of sickness to land of wellness!

This independence day I think it’s time to lay down the gauntlet as to how we as a country can reboot our sick care system to a true health, wellness, and SELF care system. This article which came out yesterday is beautiful in its simplistic and honest approach which I back 100 percent.

By Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa)

Washington, DC — With the Senate health committee convening daily to craft a comprehensive health reform bill, the basic outline of this landmark legislation is now clear.

Yes, it will ensure access to affordable, quality care for every American.  But, just as important, it will hold down health care costsby creating a sharp new emphasis on disease prevention and public health.

As the lead Senator in drafting the Prevention and Public Health section of the bill, I view this legislation as our opportunity to recreate America as a genuine wellness society – a society that is focused on prevention, good nutrition, fitness, and public health.

The fact is, we currently do not have a health care system in the United States; we have a sick care system.  If you’re sick, you get care, whether through insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP,community health centers, emergency rooms, or charity.  The problem is that this is all about patching things up after people develop serious illnesses and chronic conditions.

We spend a staggering $2.3 trillion annually on health care – 16.5 percent of our GDP and far more than any other country spends on health care – yet the World Health Organization ranks U.S. health care only 37th among nations, on par with Serbia.

We spend twice as much per capita on health care as European countries, but we are twice as sick with chronic disease.

How can this be so?  The problem is that we have systematically neglected wellness and disease prevention.  Currently in the United States, 95 percent of every health care dollar is spent on treating illnesses and conditions after they occur.  But we spend peanuts on prevention.

The good news in these dismal statistics is that, by reforming our system and focusing on fighting and preventing chronic disease, we have a huge opportunity.  We can not only save hundreds of billions of dollars; we can also dramatically improve the health of the American people.

E2 Success Story from Cleveland, Ohio

The Engine 2 team wishes everyone a happy and healthy Memorial day.

Here’s a big, hearty, and joyous shout out to Connie Sheetz from Cleveland,  Ohio. Connie grabbed the bull by the horns and started getting healthy from the inside out. With four children, two of whom are young twins, Connie is proof positive that anyone can do Engine 2 and become plant-strong, plant-smart, and plant-savvy. Way to go, Connie!!!! Keep it up!!!

What can I say, the diet was definitely hard, but when I got the results (lost 9 pounds, total cholesterol down 61 points to 143, LDL down 53 to 86) after my 28 days, it was well worth the effort. I really had to reinvent the wheel, I was eating so much dairy, meat and oils, especially dairy. But after a couple weeks- I got into a groove, and ate a lot of my favorites over and over: oatmeal, fruit and cider for breakfast, spinach and non-fat hummus panninis for lunch, and a lot of rice and beans for dinner with veggies. One of the biggest differences I noticed was how my energy level was more steady. Before I crashed and burned and then ate sugar and fat to build me up cycling like this all day, but after about 4 days on Engine 2, I wasn’t craving caffeine, sugar or fat at 4:30pm to get me through the witching hour with my kids.

I am glad I went hard core for 28 days because it did two things for me. It forced me to come up with other food choices-not saying I’ll just have a little mayo on my sandwich, you had to come up with other options. The other thing this program did, was force me to come to terms with how much I was eating for comfort and pleasure vs. eating to fuel my body. Before Engine 2, I was a 100% pleasure/comfort eater. During the month on Engine 2,I was about 100% fueling. I am going forward with the intention to eat most of my meals with fueling in mind. Thanks Rip, for the how-to-eat manual. I’ve known about the Esselstyn way of eating for over 20 years, but your book gave me the knowledge to implement it.

E2 Success Story

When people stick to the basic tenants of the Engine 2 Diet they get absolutely remarkable results. Typically, when they share the new numbers with their physicians most shake their heads in disbelief and with their jaws agape say, “whatever you’re doing just keep doing it.” I received this email yesterday and thought I would share it with all of you. If you have an Engine 2 success story you’d like to share please email me at [email protected]

This email is to let you know that I am a true believer of this book and how it changes lives. Here is my story: 6 months ago I was having extreme chest pains and shortness of breath. It was so bad that I could not even carry two bags of groceries from the driveway into the house without having to sit down and catch my breath. Even using the electric shopping carts at grocery stores was hard for me. My cholesterol and triglycerides were out of this world…252 and over 1800 respectively. My Doctor said that some of that may be hereditary but I was a walking time bomb. They decided to do an angiogram to see how bad the blockage in my heart was and they found one totally blocked but could not do a stint or surgery because the blockage was in the back of the heart and not easily reachable. It was then that my wife did some research and found this book as well as Rip’s fathers book. She immediately put me on this diet and after being on it for 3 weeks my cholesterol is down to 195, my triglycerides are down below 500, my blood pressure is 130/74, I have lost 18 pounds and my heart and chest pains are gone. I am no longer short of breath and even mowed my yard last week without feeling any pain. I saw my Doctor this week and he is totally amazed by what he saw. Thank you so much for this book and the hope that it brought………

Peter Baumann

Peter, you are oh so very welcome. I commend you on taking your life and health into your own hands and for having the courage and wherewithal to try something as basic and profound as changing the type of foods you put into your mouth.

John Joseph and me at Emo's after he lit the place up!!!

Every once in a while you meet someone who rocks your world. That happened to me last night when I met John Joseph, the lead singer for the punk rock band the Cro-Mag’s. He has more energy than the Tazmanian Devil, is more charismatic than Regis, and has led more lives than an alley cat. He’s a true rebel rouser and when his book, Meat is for Pussies, comes out in July it will turn heads, open eyes and rock worlds. You will see why eating animals will make you wimpy and then spit you out and kill you. Here’s a loud shout out to my man, John Joseph, and his insatiable plant-strong appetite for making a difference in the world. WAY TO BE JJ!!!!!!!!!!
